Buddy Miles (George Allen Miles Jr., September 5, 1947 – February 26, 2008) was an American drummer, singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer known for fusing rock, funk, soul, and blues with a heavy, groove-first feel.
Known for his powerful drumming style and soulful vocals, Miles was a pioneer in blending rock and funk. He worked with numerous legendary artists including Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and George Clinton.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska on September 5, 1947, into a musical family. His father led a jazz band, and Buddy was surrounded by music from birth.
He played drums professionally from a young age, starting at just 12 years old. Miles worked around R&B and soul circuits throughout the Midwest before breaking into major rock/funk projects in the late 1960s.
Best known to many as the drummer and co-lead vocalist in Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys era (1969–1970). The power trio featured Hendrix on guitar, Billy Cox on bass, and Miles on drums and vocals.
The lineup was captured on the classic live album Band of Gypsys, recorded at the Fillmore East on New Year's Eve 1969/New Year's Day 1970. Miles contributed vocals on several tracks and his funky, powerful drumming helped define the group's heavier, more rhythm-focused sound.
"Them Changes" is Buddy Miles' signature funk-rock anthem—one of his most enduring recordings and a staple of classic rock/funk playlists. Released in 1970 on the album of the same name.
The song showcases Miles' powerful vocals and drumming over a heavy, infectious groove. It has been sampled and covered by numerous artists and remains a funk-rock classic. The track reached the Top 40 and became Miles' biggest solo hit.
Remembered for his powerful pocket, big backbeat energy, and soulful vocals. Miles performed and recorded for decades, leaving a lasting mark across rock, funk, and R&B genres.
