James Brown – The Godfather of Soul

James Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was an American singer, songwriter, bandleader, and one of the most influential performers in modern music. He helped shape soul, invented much of what became funk, and set the standard for live showmanship with relentless rhythm, precision, and energy.

With The Famous Flames, Brown recorded songs that became cornerstones of soul:

  • “Please, Please, Please”
  • “Try Me”
  • “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World”
  • “I Got You (I Feel Good)”

Brown’s late‑1960s bands pushed rhythm to the front: sharp, interlocking parts; “on the one” emphasis; and grooves built like machines. This approach essentially created the blueprint for funk and heavily influenced hip‑hop sampling decades later.

  • “Cold Sweat”
  • “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine”
  • “The Payback”
  • “Super Bad”

Brown’s live performances were legendary: choreography, call‑and‑response, tight cues, and a band that moved like one unit. His influence stretches from soul and funk to rock, pop, and hip‑hop—both musically and visually.
