James Weldon Johnson (1871–1938) was a writer, diplomat, NAACP leader,
educator, and lyricist of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Born in Jacksonville,
he helped shape the Harlem Renaissance and national civil rights efforts.
Johnson served as a leader in the NAACP, organized anti-lynching campaigns,
and represented the United States as a diplomat. He was also the first Black
principal of what became Edward Waters University.
