Nikki Giovanni – Poet, Educator, Activist

Nikki Giovanni Nikki Giovanni (1943–2024) was one of the most powerful literary voices of the Black Arts Movement. Her poetry blended civil rights, Black identity, love, family, and social justice into accessible, emotionally direct language.

Nikki Giovanni reading Giovanni taught for decades at Virginia Tech and influenced generations of writers. She published over 25 books and recorded Grammy-nominated spoken-word albums.
