Ozzie Smith (born December 26, 1954) is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive shortstops in baseball history. A switch-hitter known for spectacular range, quick hands, and highlight-reel plays, he starred for the San Diego Padres (1978–1981) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1982–1996).
Smith entered MLB with the Padres and immediately showed extraordinary instincts at shortstop. His defense turned routine grounders into outs—and tough chances into highlights.
With the Cardinals, Smith became the face of elite infield defense. He won 13 Gold Gloves and helped anchor teams that relied on speed, pitching, and airtight defense.
One of the most famous moments in Cardinals history came in the 1985 NLCS, when Smith hit a dramatic walk-off home run that prompted broadcaster Jack Buck’s legendary call: “Go crazy folks! Go crazy!”
Smith’s impact went beyond stats—he changed expectations for what great shortstop defense looks like. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
