What Is tmux?

In simple terms, **tmux** (which stands for "terminal multiplexer") is a powerful command-line tool that allows you to manage multiple terminal sessions within a single window.

It is one of the most essential tools for developers, system administrators, and anyone who spends a lot of time working in the Linux/Unix command line, as it solves several common frustrations associated with SSH and terminal use.

---

Imagine you are connected to a remote server via SSH. You open your terminal, and you run a long process (like a build script or a server monitor). If your internet connection hiccups, or if you accidentally close your SSH window, **that process dies.** You lose all your work.

**tmux solves this.**

Instead of running a process directly in your terminal, you run it *inside* a tmux session. This session is persistent. Even if your SSH connection drops, the processes running inside the tmux session continue to run on the remote server. When you reconnect, you simply "reattach" to the session, and everything is exactly where you left it.

---

  • **Detaching:** You can "detach" from a tmux session (leaving it running in the background) and safely close your local terminal.
  • **Reattaching:** Later, you can reconnect to the server and "reattach" to the session, finding all your running processes exactly as they were.

  • **Multiple Windows:** You can create multiple virtual "windows" within your single terminal session. Each window acts like a separate, independent terminal, allowing you to run different commands simultaneously (e.g., one window for monitoring logs, one for running tests, and one for editing code).
  • **Panes:** You can split a single window into multiple smaller sections (panes). This is incredibly useful for viewing output side-by-side (e.g., viewing a server log in one pane while running commands in another).

  • **Grouping:** tmux allows you to organize these windows and panes into logical groups, making complex workflows manageable.
  • **Sharing:** If you are working with a teammate on a remote server, you can start a shared tmux session, and both of you can work in the same persistent environment, seeing each other's output.

---

| Scenario | Without tmux | With tmux | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **The Connection Drops** | All running processes stop and are lost. | The processes continue running on the server. You just reconnect and resume. | | **Running Multiple Tasks** | You must open multiple SSH windows, which can be messy. | You open one terminal, and inside it, you have multiple virtual windows and panes for all your tasks. | | **The Environment** | Your terminal is a single, fragile pipe. | Your terminal is a robust, persistent virtual desktop environment. |
